I (Rachel of The Crafted Life here), have always loved vintage ornaments. The candy colored pinks, teals and blues, the glitter, the metallics, everything. Collecting them can be a bit of a process, and not always an affordable one, so I thought I’d try my hand at making ornaments inspired by classic colors and patterns. If you’re looking to add handmade touch to your tree, with a vintage feel, then these DIY ornaments are for you! Here’s how:

Materials:

  • Glass ornaments
  • Metallic spray paint
  • Bamboo skewers
  • Gloves (for painting)
  • Tarp
  • Double sided super tape (can be found at craft store)
  • Glitter
  • Soft bristle brush
  • Paper

1. In a well ventilated area, spray paint your bulbs. For a perfect finish, remove the top of the ornament and place on a bamboo skewer. This will ensure that you never have to touch a wet bulb! Place the skewers in a cup or through some cardboard until the paint has dried. I recommend leaving to cure for 24 hours before adding glitter.

2. It’s time to add your pattern with glitter! Working with double sided super tape is perfect for this project because you will get clean, crip lines every time; the glitter will only stick to the tape and not the bulb.

When placing the tape, make sure it’s exactly where you want it before securing in place; the tape is strong and will likely peel the paint if you try to remove it from the bulb. Cover in glitter! To save the extra glitter that doesn’t stick to the bulb, work two pieces of paper so that you can lift one and pour back into the container after each pour.

3. With a soft bristle brush, wipe away any excess glitter from the bulb, reattach the top and you’re all done! If you wanted the glitter to be ultra secure, you can seal your bulb with a thin layer of Mod Podge.
